The Law and Democracy Center (Justice Hub) is pleased to announce a significant update to its comprehensive database documenting Belarusian judges involved in political repressions. The database now contains detailed records of more than 200 judges who have participated in these actions.
Originally created as a part of a previous project, this database has now been expanded to include more judges, strengthening Justice Hub’s commitment to revealing those responsible for the unjust persecution of individuals exercising their fundamental rights.
The repressions carried out by those judges can be qualified as crimes against humanity, most often, illegal deprivation of liberty and persecution on political grounds. Thus, this is also the list of persons who may be held responsible for the commission of crimes against humanity.
This expanded database continues to serve as a vital resource, offering detailed information on the activities of these judges, including specific cases and the articles of the Belarusian Criminal Code under which citizens were wrongfully convicted. It includes profiles of judges who have recently come under scrutiny for their involvement in politically motivated cases. The database thoroughly documents the accusations, evidence, and often severe penalties, including long-term imprisonment. By updating this tool, Justice Hub aims to strengthen the global effort to hold these judges accountable and combat authoritarian practices in Belarus.
The updated database, available in both English and Russian, is an indispensable asset for human rights organizations, as well as national and international institutions. The extension of the database provides critical information about 35 new judges that can be used to foster accountability, such as adding these judges to sanctions lists.
By enhancing this database, Justice Hub continues to shed light on the scale of repression in Belarus and underscore the critical role of judges in perpetuating these crimes. Our goal remains clear: to foster accountability and support all efforts to uphold justice and human rights.
